Japanese entertainment culture has a notorious underbelly. The boom of the late 90s ( Ringu, Ju-On ) introduced Western audiences to a different kind of fear: not the slasher's stab, but the creeping, wet-haired ghost of yūrei folklore, driven by resentment ( onnryō ). This aesthetic has been thoroughly co-opted by Hollywood but rarely replicated.
