Unlike the pop culture version of genies granting three wishes, this Djinn is a towering, charismatic, melancholic being. He offers Alithea three wishes in exchange for his freedom. But Alithea is a scholar; she knows that all wish-granting stories end in tragedy. To convince her that desire is not dangerous, the Djinn tells her his own story. Over the next hour, we leap across 3,000 years of history—from the Queen of Sheba, to the Ottoman Empire, to a young apprentice in 19th-century Turkey. He reveals how he was imprisoned not once, but three times, by women who feared his power, coveted his love, or simply did not listen closely enough.
