Mathieu’s pedagogy is revolutionary for the film’s setting: he treats rule-breaking as a request for attention, not a declaration of war. When the boy Mondain — a genuinely troubled older student — steals a watch and insults Mathieu, Mathieu still argues against handing him to the police, knowing the boy will be sent to a reformatory. The film does not sentimentalize Mondain’s eventual arrest; rather, it shows the limits of even Mathieu’s kindness. But overall, Mathieu’s method works because he sees the boys’ potential before they do. Awesome movie
