The difficulty of resetting the G2010 contributes to market stratification. Authorized Canon service centers possess the official reset tools and access to replacement pads. Independent repair shops must rely on leaked or cracked software tools. This enforces a monopoly on the "afterlife" of the printer.
The printer must be placed into a special diagnostic mode. Turn off the printer. Then, while holding down the Stop/Reset button (the triangle inside a circle), press and hold the Power button. Keep holding the Power button, but release the Stop/Reset button. While still holding Power, press the Stop/Reset button twice (or five times, depending on the firmware—two times is standard). Then, release the Power button. The green power light will flash, then remain steady. The printer is now in Service Mode.
